In medieval manuscripts, the start of a new paragraph was often indicated by a pilcrow (¶), not an indentation or an extra line as we usually do today. Usually these were done in the same black ink as the rest of the text. But whenever the manuscript writer wanted to call attention to a new or important idea, they would use a red one.
